These are just a few of the sub genre however my favourite one is psychological  thriller and the one film that made this my favourite is phone booth. Almost the whole film is set in a phone booth and this one place plays with your mind because you do not know what is going to happen next and it seems no matter what he dose he is going to die but the great thing about this is that everything we think is going to happen it is the complete of opposite which keeps us guessing and trying to figure things out.

How Is Suspense Created In The Step Father?

There are many suspense scenes in the film Stepfather. These scenes were created by the bomb theory, false plateau and normality. At the start of the film there is a sense of normality. This is established by the killer acting normal by having a shower, shaving and putting the radio on which is playing silent night. He also made toast and coffee which makes us the viewers think everything is normal.The audience begin to question 'Why?' until dead bodies of a women and two children.

There is a false plateau, when a cat jumps out on the 'crazy cat lady'. we are thought it was the killer but the audience is relieved when we find out when it is the cat so we begin to relax. so when the killer re-appears we are shocked.

The sub genre that interests me the most are Action Thrillers because I feel they are very exciting and leave you on the edge of your seat because you never know what is going to happen next.

How is suspense created in Stepfather

There are many suspense scenes in the film Stepfather. These scenes were created by the bomb theory, false plateau and normality these are techniques used to create this suspense. At the start of the film there is a sense of normality. This is established by the killer acting normal by having a shower, shaving and putting the radio on which is playing silent night. He also made toast and coffee which makes us the viewers think everything is normal. This is then subverted by him dyeing his hair putting in contact lenses which is making us ask questions. We then see dead bodies laying around on the floor and we get the answers that he is a killer by him leaving them behind like that. Another suspenseful scene is created by false plateau. There is a scene when the door bell rings at the old ladies house and we think it is the killer however no one is there, after that a cat jumps out and again we think its the killer but third time the killer appears. The reason why this is so effective is because it happen three times and twice we thought it was the killer but the third is was, this is good because it keeps us thinking what going to happen next and keeps the intensity of the thrilling moment going. Bomb theory also create suspense in the this film the reason being is when the killer meets the women we the viewers know he is a killer but the women don't in this case the killer is the bomb.

 

How suspense created in Stepfather

The film 'Stepfather' is filled with scenes of tension and suspense, they are mostly all created by the use of false plateau and bomb theory.

Normality

In the very first scene there is a sense of normality as a man goes through his daily routine of showering,shaving, dying his hair, putting in contact lenses and having breakfast. However when the man places his cup of coffee in the sink, the camera shows bloody knifes and tools in the sink beside it. The camera also shows family members on the floor surrounded by christmas decorations whilst silent night eerily plays in the background. At this point the audience is aware that this man is the murderer and the bomb in the film. The audience is also aware of why the man was dying his hair and trying to change his appearance which also tells the audience he has had experience of this before.

False Plateau

False plateau is also frequently used. An example of this is when David the serial killer sets off to murder Mrs. Cutter. Her doorbell rings, and the audience think it's David the murderer, when she opens the door however no one is there, so the audience assume he's already in the house, when the woman turns around she is suprised by her cat that jumps out and scares her, this scares the audience also but is a relieve as it's not him, then he appears.

Bomb Theory

An example of bomb theory used is the last scene of the film, when he meets the women in the supermarket. The audience know he's a serial killer, yet the new family who's life he's about to enter does not, they think what the audience also believed at the start of the film.

How is suspense created in the stepfather?

Throughout the 'The Stepfather' suspense is created to show the characters mind frame. the main character is seen as a twisted, demented human being as he murders for no good reason. We see this when he kills a harmless old women and the father of his soon to be step children. suspense is used by using a false plateau when we see the cat jump out on the old women when we are expecting the villan David to turn up, as the audience we are relieved to see the cat jump out. As she carried on walking David shockingly appears out of one of the doors and violently brings her life to a tragic end by suffocating her with no remorse.
