EVALUATION What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? How will you attract your audition?

'Asleep' is a suspense thriller written and directed by Tony Lawson, he founded his cinematography production company FLIKBOX Motion Pictures in 2009 and 'Asleep' was their first official short film. The student film was filmed with a $20 budget (£12.26), and shot on JVC GY-HD110U. It has 23,623 views on youtube where it was first published. Not only did youtube give him constructive feedback it was able to help promote the independent production company.

This gave me the idea to also promote our thriller 'The Other Side' using youtube. Youtube's biggeset advanytage as its available to everyone regardless of age, gender etc, theres no specific audience, and its free. However there are some downfalls such as the idea or actual film can be copied by anyone.

Another type of media institution is Facebook, Facebook is used worldwide by over 500 million people. A lot of people use Facebook to promote or showcase their products/services including for example Adam Deacon used Facebook to promote his film 'Adulthood'; this was the best type of promotion for his film as his target audience was mainly young adults/teenagers and Facebook is widely used by these audiences therefore this made his promotion highly successful. 'The Other Side' could also be promoted via Facebook as its target audience is similar to 'Adulthood'. However, Facebook's disadvantage is that it the actual Facebook group/fanpage  depends largely upon open Facebook users to repost the links in order to make the fanpage popular.

Vimeo is another type of institution. Vimeo was created especially to encouraging individuals with a wide range of video interests; and inspire people to show their creative sides. It is not greatly used, but the people that do use all have similar interests unlike youtube, where the categories are vast.

Looking back at your premliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in progression from it to the full product?

Before the creation of 'The Other Side' we had a preliminary task which was to make a short clip of a bag swap. The prelim task was very different to our thriller task as we were only just getting familiar with all the camera's and equipment and it had to be created and edited in a short space of time. Although there were a lot of downside's it was also a good experience to test different camera shots and how to use all the equipment. During filming a lot of mistakes were made but from our thriller you can see a major improvement from the camera angles used as in 'The Bag Swap' they were minimal.

A vital difference between our prelim and final thriller was that genre was totally different. Our prelim had one objective which was for the bag to be swapped but in our thriller we had many objectives for example to portray confusion as it was  a physiological thriller. In our prelim we also had no theme, costume and target audience unlike our thriller. In our prelim there was no titles but in our thriller the titles showed a lot about the thriller.

In our prelim we started with a small introduction about the film which tells you a bit about what you was going to see. In our thriller we started with the candi production ident which makes the thriller seem professional . In our our thriller as you see we have short long titles with a low fade at the back of them to show the intensity, in the prelim our  titles were at the end as the time period to create the clip and edit was so short we never had time to put it in the right position and our skills weren't developed as much so that we could it comfortably.

Since learning how to use the camera's for example gaining knowledge in zooming, panning and learning how to record we have put clips together using the video drive and editing them using Final Cut Pro. As you can see there is a shot from the prelim and a shot from the thriller you can tell the differents with the quality. In the thriller you can see how we have got used to the different camera angle shots as you can see its a low angle close up shot of the feet. On the other hand you can see in the prelim we had a shot were the person is not even in the shot as we were not used to panning the camera in different direction we lost sight of the character as the framming is poor, which shows how far we have come since the prelim as a group.

THRILLER
PRELIM
Another vital thing we have improved on is using the sound on Final Cut pro as in our prelim you can hear the noises in the background for example the rush and people talk which looked and sounded very un-proffesional, however in our thriller the sound is very effective as it the only thing you apart from the glass dropping which i felt was vital we got that right as it decreases the quality of the work.

                                                                  Location

The location was another big difference as the prelim was set in college there  is no thrilling element and you can immediately tell this is a college project but when doing our final thriller it was set in a all white bathroom which was off school ground which gave it a professional spice as it was not done by nobody else in AS Media this year so it was a very unique location.

                                                                  Outfit

The mis en scene like the outfit was also changed and made specific for the thriller unlike the prelim were it was just do it in whatever clothing you felt comfortable so it didn't portray nothing to the audience. In the thriller you see the outfit is all white which connotes purity and angel-ism but that is quickly changes when blood appears on his hands.

                                                                   Effects/Editing

In our thriller we had used a lot of effects for example fades in and a glass smashed in rewind with also slow motion, we did this on Final Cut. Another use of editing was we used a cross dissolve transition which shows the same shot in two different perspective. We also incorparated a fade in which we thought it was more challenging and creative as it merges to scenes together and we did this a flashback motion. In our bag swap we also used a rewind which was incredible but we felt it was used to more  effect in the thriller as it showed the confusion unlike in the bag swap we used it but it never really had no effect on the audience, we also did this on Final Cut Pro. When using slow motion we wanted the audience to feel the characters emotion that is why we used this and a main inspiration for this was the video below.

                                                           Technology

The technology was a big turn around as I personally never used a apple mac before and I feel I have improved because I have learnt how to edit, make sounds and how to use a Apple Mac comfortably as at the beginning I was a total amateur and had no experience using such a computer with a higher technology .

                                                                Teamwork

My time on this project I have learnt that teamwork is vital. My group went through alot of hard times as we never agreed on all aspects of the film. At the beggining we had diffulculties with the name as it was called deceptus but had to be changed as the audience might have percived it in a different way. We also had diffulcuties with attendence as at the begginging sometimes we had different members of our groups not turn up on certain occassions. Once we had a group meeting and sorted out all of our issues our team was very punctual and that made us achieve a great opening sequence. We all gave ourselves certain roles for example I was the actor/editor, Imani was the editor, Samarge the director and Michael the music producer. Overall I have learnt how to use a JVC camera, still camera's, memory cards and a tripod. My experience was good and I would defonetly do it again as I enjoyed working with a team throughout my filming process.

8) Evaluation: Look back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product

I am going to show what we have learnt from the prelim to our final thriller opening . i am going to show the improvements of our group using editing, mis en scene, sound and camera.

This is our prelim as you can see it is not very good. the reason for this is mainly because we did not et enough light into the lens and we had the filter on.

Here in our final film the other side we see the lighting is much better as we knew there was little light therefore we took the light filter off. and this is a much better piece which we have put together and shows improvement.

Here is the mis en scene it is very simple not in any way complex and not really effective and quite dull because it doesn't ask question or make the audience feel in any way.

This however if you see it, it asks question why and who and is it a good and bad thing he is doing and this makes the audience feel worried and unlike the prelim the mis en scene much more thought about in detail and what it can do.

There is no sound in the prelim just talking and nothing really to build up the tension and make the audience feel at the edge of there seat there were just talking and nothing else. however in our final film we tried to adress this problem in adding sound making it build up to something and keep the audience engaged. with the editing it was not at its best we found it hard to make it good because we didn't really know any of the extra things the programs does to improve your film. On the other hand in our final film we gained greater knowledge of this and tried to apply it which i feel it went well.

Here is a link to our prelim to you can watch it

Here is a link to our final cut the other side you can watch it and see the improvements.

Audience feedback and comment

When we put our final edited film together it was shown to our class and to other Media students. All AS Media students went to 'Screen On The Green' a cinema which has one screen. My group got positive feedback and also area that needed to be clearer. the audience that responded to my film were within our target audience as they were young teens who also have a very hectic social life, as the feedback is very positive I am very pleased with our opening although it could have been changed slightly.

Evaluation - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? How will you attract your audition?

Picnic was made by students from Newcastle college and has 7000+ hits on YouTube. The internet has helped them a huge amount as without it they would not have no were else to promote there film. Website like YouTube give people from all over the world not specific countries to upload any video clip to show the world, it also allows viewers to comment giving feedback on what they feel about the clip. The Other Side is a  low budget film made by college students it can be found on blogger and also YouTube. The production is independent made by my group and it will get cinematic viewing by class peers and maybe family members. The film will get DVD of only 200 copies. They have also been getting great feedback from viewers all over the world for example one viewer said 'This was awesome. It had great idea and has inspired me for my next film project!'

Evaluation: 4&5: the kind of media institution might distribute my media product & how will i attract aduience?

Our film is low budget we did not have all the money to buy all the lastest technology and have the world class superstart actors but what we had we used to the best of our ability. we also created our own production company with the help of candi studio. our film will be in cinema april 5th and there are going to be 200 people to watch the opening. also there will be a DVD release of 200 copies given out with our opening on it.  Also i plan to put our opening on Facebook and vimeo to get it out to a even wider audience.

Here is a student film called glitch it has  284,290 views. the internet has helped this student to launch a film and get it out there for people to watch on things like youtube, social networking sites and vimeo . when it comes to youtube there are more than a billion people signed up or using it so not just his family and friends and his peers can see the whole world can see what he has done.

Wordle: GROUP 21 - CANDI THRILLER MEDIA AS

Evaluation: Media Institution & Distribution

Instituion
CANDIStudios will be the institution for my thriller 'The Other Side' because it is the best independent college around. For a college it has many professional equipment and facilities and gives young upcoming students to learn and develop skills so that one day they can move onto a more expensive more high profile institution that will mean they have more expensive equipment and better actors. Starting off with CANDIStudios is a good way for students to start off because it gives a fair amount of publicity and people can see what greatness we can do with minimal facilitates.

Distrubition

Becuae the college has a low budget our films are distributed by Vimeo.

What I have done to distribute the film so far is put it on facebook and twitter. Ive asked for comments and the things they have told me you can see from my target audience blog wordle. Also the college arranged for the thriller to be shown on a small cinema named The Screen and the feedback from that is on the target audience blog videos. Next I am planning to put the video on youtube and promote even more on facebook and twitter. Also I am going to broadcast on blackberry. These distrubutions will promote to my peers that are my age however I want to distrubute to a 18-25 audience so 200 DVD's have been made for sale so I will buy one and get my brother, A 28 year old marketer to help promote the thriller.

Justin Bieber is an example of what the social stream can do to your reputation and publicity. He went from a normal teenage boy to a  worldwide superstar

Evaluation: Who would be the audience for your media product?

  • Bob is 18. He has A levels for psychology, media & film.

  • He is going to do Media in university.

  • He enjoys watching films (especially in cinema)

  • His favourite kind of films are psychological thrillers.

  • There his favourite because "I love the violence and psychological issues. Any film that has death and a character with psychological problems is my type of film"

  • His favourite films are Memento directed by Christopher Nolan, American Psycho directed by Mary Harron, Se7en directed by David Fincher & Silence of the Lambs directed by Jonathon Demme

Evaluation: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The main character in 'The Other Side' has the typical connotations of a "bad guy"

    • big
    • black
    • bad
    • bloody

However he is different because he is sorry for the things he does. This shocks the audience because you wont expect that from him. This alter ego twist in 'The Other Side' is what makes it a great psychological thriller. And the audience gets to delve into the strange complex mind of the murderer

Evaluations-In what ways does media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

THE OTHER SIDE VS THE STEPFATHER
    ROUND 1

As you can see the first object we lay our eyes on is the ident. The other side uses Candi studios which is a low budget company and is funded by the government. Screen gems is a high budget worldwide company which has produced so many high budget films such as 'Stomp The Yard' and 'Resident Evil'.

    ROUND 2)

Secondly you almost definitely see the production company which in our case it is a independent company called 'GROUP 21' founded by myself and other members of the group. Then we have again the high budget company Screen Gems.

                                                                         ROUND 3)

We then see the in both film opening  a body part of the main character in 'The Stepfather this is Dylan Walsh a experienced actor from L.A being in another 15 films and Denzel an amazing aspiring actor from Islington.

    ROUND 4)

In both fims we then see another body part of the main character then the title written on or next to a piece of mis en scene. This slowly gets the audience into the film and gets them ready for the main action.

    ROUND 5)

We then see the name of the co-actors in 'The Stepfathers' case it is alongside his face, what I have noticed throughout is that in 'The Stepfather' the writing never or rarely gets in the way of the character its either beside him or in-between which I feel is effective because it never gets in the way of any action that is happening, so we tried to follow that fashion but we never applied to every section of the title sequence.

    ROUND 6)

The music supervisors are vital to both opening as in ours without the music there is no suspense and it would be try, so I feel it brings alot of life to our title sequence. In 'The Stepfather' the music also builds up tension as we think hes a nice guy we later find out his real plan which I felt was really effective.

    ROUND 7)

'The Stepfather' shows the production company which is a high budget company called 'GRANADA' who are well known and also produce British television 'ITV'. It shows the directors name in our case as they are also vital in putting input into the film deciding the camera shots that will be taken.

    ROUND 8)

We then start getting into the main pieces of action.Similarly in both openings you see a change of identity, the colour of eyes. In 'The Other Side' the eyes go from a piercing light green to a dark brown which catches the attention of the audience immediately. In 'The Stepfather' you see the eyes change from a light hazel to a dark blue which shows his change in identity which we find out later why he does this.

    ROUND 9
